The Stop-Breathe-Be Technique + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
Weβre all dealing with *a lot* right now. California is on fire. Gaza is still on fire. There are ten days until a man who led an attack on the US Government is sworn in as its leader. Wooo, doggy (Iβm tired, are you?).
So Iβd like to introduce you to a technique I learned recently from the book The Five Resets by Aditi Nerurkar (recommended in last weekβs newsletter). Itβs called the Stop-Breathe-Be Technique and it can help ease stress, calm your anxiety and ground you in the present moment.
It looks like this:
π STOP: Physically pause and bring your body to a stop.
ππ»ββοΈ BREATHE: Take a deep breath in and out.
π¦ BE: Ground yourself in the present moment. Bring awareness to where you are, what you hear/smell/see and how your body feels.
It only takes a couple seconds, but taps into your mind-body connection and gives your brain the break it needs and deserves.
While you can do the technique anytime β especially when you feel a bit anxious, you can also try habit stacking it to something you do regularly β like unlocking your phone, sitting down at your computer, or walking through a certain doorway.
Iβve been loving it so much that I created desktop + phone wallpapers that help me remember to prioritize it throughout the day. You can download the designs right here:
Hope it helps.
π READ: Whenever I write something, I usually say a little prayer that it *wonβt* go viral, because last time that happened I got doxxed by White Supremacists and nearly had to go into hiding β yes, really. But if there WAS one thing Iβve written that I really HOPED would go wildly viral it was this piece I wrote in August of 2023, while wild fires ravaged the city of Maui, trying to explain climate change using baseball. Please read it right here.
πΎ DONATE: The Pasadena Humane Society has already taken in hundreds of animals with burns from the fires currently ravaging LA County and are treating them in their ICU. If youβre able, make a donation to support their efforts here (just click the big orange DONATE button).
πΊ WATCH: I meant to share this last week because Apple TV was free for a couple of days, but totally forgot! We recently finished the second season of Shrinking, and if you havenβt watched it yet I can recommend it! The shows follows a team of psychologists through the ups and downs of their lives β along with their patientsβ. Harrison Ford is so wonderful in it! Watch the trailer here:
π§ LISTEN: Iβve recently been dipping my toes into
βs podcast Power User. Her writing is so brilliant, I figured her podcast probably is, too β and I was right. Having stepped back from social media and the way I post there over the past year, I really resonated with the most recent episode featuring Patreon CEO Jack Conte. One line has been playing over and over again in my head: βCreators are now creating for the algorithm, rather than for their audience.β I feel like that perfectly summarizes why Iβve felt so disconnected from those platforms lately β I donβt want to create stuff just to go get views or new followers. I want to deeply connect with people and that has become increasingly difficult. Give it a listen.𧑠ENJOY: You know those recipes that you make over and over and over (and over) again for years? This is one of those recipes. We make these Ground Turkey Korean Rice Bowls (also great with ground pork or beef!) a couple of times a month, and I usually double the meat because its so easy to repurpose the leftovers for a quick lunch. I have the ingredients in the fridge for this weekend. Grab the recipe right here.
