End-of-Year brain dump + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
Thereβs something about the end of the year (25 more days!) that can make your brain feel like mush.
Doing an End-of-Year Brain Dump can help, and these are my simple steps:
ποΈ STEP ONE: Get out a big notepad or open a fresh Google Doc (whatever your preferred method is).
ποΈ STEP TWO: Get a pen and four different colored highlighters or markers.
β±οΈ STEP THREE: Set a timer for ten minutes and start writing down everything thatβs bouncing around in your head. Donβt hold back β write down everything that pops up whether its personal, work, etc. You can use these prompts to help extract things:
What are you worrying about?
What have you been procrastinating?
What are people expecting of you in the weeks to come?
What projects do you hope to complete in the next 3-4 weeks?
What deadlines do you need to be aware of?
What events, meetings, or other obligations do you have coming up?
Are there any birthdays, anniversaries, or other celebrations coming up?
What big questions are you trying to answer right now?
What topics are you trying to learn more about?
What relationships are you trying to improve or strengthen?
What healthy habits are you currently trying to do more of?
What are things you WANT to prioritize as the year wraps up?
π§π»ββοΈ STEP FOUR: When the timer goes off, stop writing, and take three deep breaths. Nice job!
π STEP FIVE: Now go through the stuff you wrote down and color-code each item by assigning a color to each of these four areas:
ππ» Do: A task that needs to be done by you.
π Delay: A task that can be delayed to a later date.
π§πΌβπ€βπ§π½ Delegate: A task that can be handed off to someone else.
π«Delete: A task that can be removed entirely.
Then work through an action for each of those areas, in reverse:
π«Delete: Take whatever action is required to remove this item from your plate. Work through these first.
π§πΌβπ€βπ§π½ Delegate: Add their initials next to it and identify the next action you need to take for handing it off to them. Work through these second.
π Delay: Identify the new deadline and the next action you need to take to reschedule it. Work through these third.
ππ» Do: With only these tasks remaining, you can treat it as your to-do list for the remainder of the year. Rewrite these down the left side of a clean sheet of paper, and then identify a next action for each item to the right of it. Choose three to start with, then choose three more.
Feels better, doesnβt it?
THE 2025 HABIT TRACKER IS HERE! β
In case you missed it, I just released my 2025 digital habit tracker for Google Sheets. Check out the post for a video tutorial and access to the file. LEARN MORE HERE.
π READ: Are you hating the new iOS 18 updates as much as I am? Iβm usually a good sport about updates, because typically I come to love the changes even if they are hard to get used to at first. But this update is really driving me crazy. The photos are a mess. The emojis are gigantic. The cluttered control center. π« Fortunately, this article from The Washington Post shows you how to (mostly) fix it.
πΊ WATCH: Last week Netflix launched a new reality dating show, The Later Daters, that features singles in their 50s to early 70s. Weβve been diving into the episodes and I gotta say β I love it. Its fun seeing people date at a point in life where they know who they are and what they want. Watch the trailer below:
π§ LISTEN: SO many of you have recommended this book to me and last week I saw a ton of online discussion about how great it is on audio?! Itβs available with Spotify Premium and is cued up as my next listen. βDrawing on her life as an indigenous scientist, and as a woman, Kimmerer shows how other living beings--asters and goldenrod, strawberries and squash, salamanders, algae, and sweetgrass--offer us gifts and lessons, even if we've forgotten how to hear their voices. In reflections that range from the creation of Turtle Island to the forces that threaten its flourishing today, she circles toward a central argument: that the awakening of ecological consciousness requires the acknowledgment and celebration of our reciprocal relationship with the rest of the living world.β Listen on Spotify or order a copy via Bookshop.org,
𧑠ENJOY: I donβt think a cook with orzo enough. Actually Iβm not even sure if its a grain or a pasta (but I just googled it and it is, indeed, a pasta). Plus, I love a meal where everything β carb, fiber, protein, fat! β are combined in a bowl β especially when it looks this pretty. Canβt wait to try this Butternut Squash and Black Bean Orzo with Sausage and Spinach.
I just completed my end-of-year brain dump and it was so helpful!!! Thank you!!
I like the new photos app on iOS 18 lol itβs easy to customize for me and see only what you want and still have access to your library without going into a separate folder.
