Since last week’s newsletter was a bit of a bummer (tl;dr - we are saying farewell to our precious dog, Walter, on April 24) I felt like I owed you a list of goodness to end the week. Here are a few things keeping me afloat at the moment:
🪑 I shared my new desk chair a couple weeks ago, but circling back to say that I am so so so so soooooo happy with it (and so is my back). If you’re in the market, I got the Hbada Butterfly Chair (not sponsored content, just awesome).
🐟 Have you heard about the Fish Doorbell? It's basically an underwater camera livestreaming from a small Dutch river in the city of Utrecht. Your job is to watch the camera and ring the doorbell when you see a fish so the loch operator can open the boat lock. Find it at visdeurbel.nl
✊🏼 The fundraiser I was amplifying to help a family evacuate from Gaza reached its $70K goal...thanks in part to members of this community. Ahmed arrived in Cairo, has gotten 18 members of his family on the list for evacuation, half of them arrived safely in Cairo at the end of March, and last week the other half of his family arrived in Cairo! One of his brothers-in-law decided to remain in Gaza. Thank you so so so much to everyone who donated, amplified, and prayed, for this family’s safe passage ❤️ I've tried my best to message people directly if I know of your donation, but feel free to reach out if you want any additional information or updates.
🐶 We made a “Walterlist” with 8 items we want to do before we say goodbye. I’ve been posting little updates to Instagram when we check something off. So far we’ve spent a day in the hammock and gotten Walter his favorite steak sandwich.
🥐 Many of you suggested that we plan to leave our house for a couple days after Walter’s passing. Last night we decided to dip down to Paris for a couple days at the end of the month. So if you have suggestions, send ‘em my way.
TGIF,
📚 READ: Am I the only person that is just perplexed that we’re still doing wars?! It feels absolutely archaic that this is how grown adults are solving disputes in the year 2024. Anyways, since piles of dead children don’t seem to be doing the trick, please consider the environmental impact that wars have on our planet. This article, “Ecocide in Gaza: Does Scale of Destruction Amount To A War Crime?”, explains the long-term environmental impact caused by war (and war crimes). Makes you think about how wars fought on the other side of the world directly impact YOUR health and wellbeing.
📺 WATCH: We finally watched American Fiction (Oscar nominee for best picture) last week and I absolutely loved it. Watch the trailer here.
🎧 LISTEN: YOU GUYS! Have you heard that an absolutely insane number of cicadas are about to hatch in the United States?! I now know way more than I need to know about cicadas: they are big a$$ insects that bury themselves underground for 10+ years at a time. The “broods” hatch on different cycles, and this year TWO US-based broods, The Great Southern Brood (13 year cycle) and the Illinois Brood (17 year cycle), will hatch at the exact same time. That won’t happen again for another 221 years! How many will there be? Apparently if they were lined up head-to-tail they’d stretch to the moon and back THIRTY THREE TIMES (!!!!!!!!!). That is like….a lot of bugs. This article from the New York Times has all the information you need, or you can tune in to this podcast episode from Emergence Magazine.
🧡 ENJOY: I really practiced restraint when I didn’t immediately order 25 of these bookmarks for all my ACOTAR fans. What a hoot! Find them on Etsy.
