Support for Haven Watch + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
The situation in Minnesota is still volatile, despite announcements that ICE would leave the state.
One area that activists are continuing to need support, is helping detainees get to safety after being released.
Many are being released in the middle of the night, in whatever clothes they were apprehended in — which is often not appropriate for the Minnesota weather in February in the dead of night.
There are also reports of people being dropped off in parks and other wooded areas. Some with physical injuries and little clothing.
Haven Watch is a local organization that maintains a peaceful presence outside the Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis 24/7. When someone is released, they are able to offer them a warm drink, a coat or blanket, a warm car to step into, and access to phone or a free ride home. Their work is ongoing, and there is no end in sight.
This week they updated their Amazon Wishlist of things their volunteers need ASAP. You can click here to view their list of needs — add something to your cart and it will be sent directly to their team (and I know Amazon isn’t the greatest, but organizations have limited options for managing efforts like this, so hold your nose).
You can also find information about supporting them through Venmo or GoFundMe on their website.
If you’d like to read more about them, or why they need some of these items, you can read their recent Facebook post.
If you know that a detention center will be opening in a town near you, pay attention to what Haven Watch is doing and start thinking about how you can get a similar organization started before the need is urgent.
📚 READ: I was recently introduced to Card Catalog, a Substack written by a librarian who is teaching all about media literacy and AI. I’m….obsessed with the entire thing and secretly want to meet up with Hana IRL (if you see this, come to Copenhagen! I will show you all the pretty libraries!). This recent piece, A Non-Exhaustive List of Sources for When You Need Real Information, is a great resource to keep in your pocket. Here’s an excerpt:
Last week, my mom texted me a link with the message: “Is this real?”
She’s asking because she doesn’t know anymore, and neither does anyone else. We’re living through information vertigo: that spinning, nauseating feeling when you can’t tell which way is up. Every source claims to be “just reporting the facts.” Every platform promises to be “unbiased.” Every algorithm swears it’s showing you what matters. Meanwhile, we’re all trying to figure out if the thing we’re reading is true, partially true, misleadingly true, or completely false. It’s exhausting, and it makes you want to stop trying to stay informed at all. KEEP READING…
📺 WATCH: I loved The Queens Gambit, and although the show is based on a novel and supposedly not any real women in chess (errkay?), I still feel like Queen of Chess, a new documentary that just came out on Netflix, is giving real gambit vibes. Watch the trailer here:
🎧 LISTEN: One of my long-time favorite podcasts, Breaking Down Patriarchy, recently came to an end after 5 glorious seasons. I’ll admit, I haven’t listened to every episode (there’s so many!) but the series is such an incredible journey through patriarchy, feminism, gender and equality. In the final episode the host, Amie, interviews her three adult daughters. It’s so good. Listen below or wherever you get your podcasts:
🧡 ENJOY: I’ve been trying to share some of our go-to recipes that we make at least a few times a month — especially ones that are nourishing but simple. This Coconut Rice with Salmon and Cilantro Sauce has been in the rotation for years! We usually add a green vegetable on the side (broccoli, green beans, etc) and we also add a hot chili pepper into the blender when making the sauce. Grab the recipe here.
