Holiday vibes + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
We spent last week with friends in Budapest, Hungary. It was a short trip — but we packed a lot in! A highlight for me was visiting the Hospital in the Rock, a sprawling labyrinth of 6+ miles of tunnels built into a rocky hillside below “Buda” where they operated a hospital during WWII (and then a nuclear bunker during the Cold War Era). Recommend checking it out if you ever find yourself in Budapest!
This week’s selections make it obvious that I’m already in a holiday mood! Because today we’re off to Denmark’s mainland for our first of two Friendsgivings. We’ll be driving — a rarity for us! And while our puppy has traveled by train, cargo bike, paddleboard, kayak, electric boat, bike basket, bus and water tax — this will be her first time in a car (at nearly 9 months old). Excited to see what she thinks of it. Have a great weekend!
📚 READ: ‘Tis the season to curl up with a good book — or maybe put one on your holiday wish list or under the tree?! So, figured I’d take the opportunity to recommend one of the best non-fiction books I’ve read in the past couple of years — The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. Ultimately the book is about what makes for a well-lived life, but it also has a fun multi-verse theme and explore concepts of time that I found really fascinating. TW for mentions of suicide. Learn more and get a copy here.
📺 WATCH: This documentary about Eddie Murphy came out on Netflix last week and it’s a really fun watch! While I knew he had an extensive repertoire, I didn’t realize how he helped make space for Black men in comedy. Was fun to learn more about how his career unfolded and how he helped shape the careers of so many others. Watch the trailer here:
✊🏻ACTION: My friend Fran (you might know her as @PagingDrFran!) spends part of each week working at a clinic that serves low-resource patients. This week she’s leading an online effort to stock a food shelf for pregnant women who visit the clinic. You can support her effort directly by sending money via Venmo to @Franziska-Haydanek — every bit helps. I sent $20 — can anyone match that? Here’s her reel about it on Instagram if you want to see what she’s up to and learn more! If you have the Venmo app, point your phone’s camera at the QR code below to make a donation:
🎧 LISTEN: Witnessing the genocide in Gaza unfold over the past two+ years and advocating against it while navigating the complexities of antisemitism and current political climate has been challenging. One voice I have really appreciated and learned from is Matt Bernstein. We have a long drive today, and I have this episode queued up for it. Listen here or wherever you listen to podcasts:
🧡 ENJOY: You know what time it is! Time for my annual share of this Holiday Grilled Cheese Recipe from Iowa Girl Eats! I share it every. single. year. because it really is the BEST thing to do with those turkey leftovers. Thank me later! Grab the recipe.

Loved The Midnight Library! It's self-help in fiction form.
