Support for chronic illness and aging + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
There’s a quote that floats around the internet that goes something like, “Everyone will have a disability if they live long enough.”
And it’s true — if we’re lucky enough to live to a ripe ol’ age we ARE going to experience chronic illness and/or a disability. This is just one reason I was honored to build the website for HealthBridge Advocacy — which launched last month!
Amy & Audrey were amazing clients…and I’m so honored that I got to play a small part in the work they’ll do as patient advocates. If you’ve ever navigated chronic illness, aging — or caregiving for someone who has — you already understand how vital their work is.
Our goal was to create a site that didn’t add to the overwhelm their clients are often already facing — and provide free downloads and digital products to help people navigate common obstacles. They built a suite of incredible tools, but my favorite is this guidebook that helps you assess independent living facilities. It can be so easy to forget to ask important questions when you are on the spot — a digital resource like this is *so helpful* to people in that situation.
This project was a great example of two women who saw an opportunity to help and support their community, and then got the credentials and built a business that can do just that. If you missed the piece I wrote last week about Safeguarding our Work for an Uncertain Future, you can head over here to learn more about the platform I recommend + get my free worksheet to explore what you might want to create.
📚 READ: I feel so honored to be part of the global immigrant community, and the way the US is currently treating immigrants is incredibly upsetting. There’s nothing wrong with expecting people to follow laws and immigrate legally, but there’s also no justification for the inhumane treatment of people who violate those rules and ESPECIALLY people who have not violated them. New reports are emerging every day of long-time residents of the US being assaulted and detained, despite the fact that they have built careers, raised families, given to their communities, and adhered to strict immigration requirements. It is incredibly undemocratic to be snatching people off the streets without informing their family of their arrest, and detaining them without due process. Here are a few stories worth being aware of:
After 47 years in the US, Ice took this Iranian mother from her yard. Her family just wants her home
📺 WATCH: This week the “Big, Beautiful Bill” has passed both the House and Senate. I’m devasted by this, and know it will negatively impact so many people and causes that I care about. As usual, John Oliver does a great job summarizing what’s in it:
🎧 LISTEN: If you don’t recognize Matt Bernstein’s name, you’d likely at least recognize his pink-and-blue-gradient Instagram graphics that educate his 1.8 million followers on topics ranging from climate change to transgender rights. Matt hosts a podcast called A Little Bit Fruity, and it’s such a fresh, witty, and smart take on current events. I loved his recent episode on the The Antisemitism Panic — a great look at how antisemitism exists and is an issue, but is also being weaponized to usher in fascism across the globe.
🧡 ENJOY: In case you don’t know: every single Friday for more than seven months now I have been sharing “Moment’s of Awe and Friday Funnies” on my Instagram Story. I do this for two reasons: 1. Awe and wonder can help cultivate a positive mindset and keep us engaged with the world around us even in times of immense struggle and 2. Joy is an act of resistance, just like this little sign says (support a Black-owned business and order one here). If you need a big dose of awe or laughter today you can find an archive of each of them in the Highlights on my profile.
