THE WEEKLY PAGE π No. 257
5-step release for anxiety + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
I know this has been an incredibly relaxing week, with no big headlines or anxiety-inducing events (π¬π) so I hope this doesnβt end up being entirely useless but this is one of my favorite ways to decrease anxiety as you end the week (if any of this sounds familiar, thatβs because I am republishing this intro from No. 219, from almost exactly one year ago. Shame that itβs still so relevant, eh?).
Itβs a 5-step release method developed by British physician Dr. Chatterjee. To do it, grab a piece of paper and write down:
One thing about next week that you're CURRENTLY anxious about.
One PRACTICAL thing you can do to prevent or prepare for it.
One reason it's PROBABLY not going to be as bad as you fear.
One reason you know you can HANDLE it.
One upside of the SITUATION.
Take a deep breath and try to enjoy your weekend,
π READ: This week I finally started reading
s latest book, The Last American Road Trip. Iβve recommended it here (along with her previous books!) many times, but now that Iβm finally turning its pages I can say that it is a cathartic read at the moment. Itβs different from her other books, in that it is a memoir and is much more personal, but still offers a historical perspective along with her sharp political analysis interwoven with lines that are so beautiful they bring me to tears. Learn more and get a copy.πΊ WATCH: I saw a post last week that said, βThink I watch too much reality TV? God forbid I analyze modern sociology, group behavior, conflict analysis, dispute resolution, and cultural anthropologyβ and it definitely reminded me of my plummet deep into the abyss of Reality TV. It started with a backlog of Teen Mom during the pandemic (highlights how systems in the US are set up to trap people in poverty) and continued with every season of every version of Below Deck (a great look at classism across the board). When our dog was dying I trauma bonded with Vanderpump Rules (an analysis ofβ¦..everything) and this recent shitshow has forced me to try the ultimate in trash reality TVβ¦.The Housewives of Beverly Hills. It isβ¦absolutely as dramatic as I expected.
π§ LISTEN: I loved the Wiser World series on the history of Israel and Palestine, so I looked to see if she put out an episode on Iran. As an American who grew up after 9/11 Iβve had to come to terms with my limited and skewed understanding of the Middle East and do my best to teach myself more. If you subscribe to her Podcast on Patreon you can also get access to great study guide PDFs along with the episodes. Listen below or wherever you listen to podcasts:
01𧑠ENJOY: Pasta is the salad ingredient MVP, IMO β so hereβs a Pesto Chicken Caesar Pasta Salad from Dishing Out Health Iβm planning to try next week. Get the recipe here.
