Global protests tomorrow (find yours) + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
Tomorrow there are 1800+ protests planned across the world to stand against Trump’s authoritarian policies, the brutal deportation practices being carried out across the US, and the attacks against vital services like Medicare and Medicaid.
There’s even one in Copenhagen (and nearby in Malmo, Sweden!) and you can bet I’ll be out there — you can find the event closest to you by visiting the event website.
Never attended a protest before? It can be intimidating (I still remember the nerves of attending my first march!). The important thing is just showing up — once you’re there, I promise you’ll feel included and know what to do. An easy first step is just to go somewhere nearby to check out the crowd or feel out the energy — then move closer when you feel comfortable, if you don’t — leave. If possible, find a friend to join you or a local group that plans to attend together. If you’re in Copenhagen and looking for someone to go with, hit reply on this email and I’ll give you meet-up details. I’d also suggest looking at this helpful post, A Few Things to Bring to Your First Protest. Not able to attend a protest in person? 📚 READ: Does your brain and body know that “the vibes are off”? This can be described as hypernormalization, a word first articulated in 2005 by scholar Alexei Yurchak to describe the civilian experience in Soviet Russia. Hypernormalization describes life in a society where two main things are happening: “The first is people seeing that governing systems and institutions are broken. And the second is that, for reasons including a lack of effective leadership and an inability to imagine how to disrupt the status quo, people carry on with their lives as normal despite systemic dysfunction – give or take a heavy load of fear, dread, denial and dissociation.” Read the full article, Systems are crumbling – but daily life continues. The dissonance is real. or watch the Reel mentioned in the article here:
📺 WATCH: There’s a special place in my heart for Natasha Lyonne and I can’t wait to watch her new series, Poker Face. She plays Charlie, a woman with an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can’t help but solve.
🎧 LISTEN: I am often asked what resources I rely on to stay informed in these tumultuous times. One of those resources is the Movement Memos podcast by Menominee author, organizer, movement educator Kelly Hayes. Her past episodes are a valuable toolbox of methods, solutions and advice. Subscribe to it on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts.
🧡 ENJOY: If there’s only one thing you know about me I hope its the fact that I absolutely love picnics. I will picnic anywhere, anytime, in practically any whether. I’d like as many of my meals as possible to be outside, and in the summer I am all about packing up delicious sandwiches that travel well. Currently eyeing this Pear, Prosciutto, and Mozzarella Grilled Cheese from Camilla Styles. Get the recipe.
