This month I published a series of articles on sleep! In case you missed them, here’s a recap:
🌙 What Happens When We Sleep
We (should) spend a third of our lives asleep. That’s more time than we spend eating, talking, working, or scrolling the Gram (I hope!) — and yet, for a long time, sleep has been a bit of a mystery. Scientists didn’t fully understand why we did it or what exactly was going on when we closed our eyes.
🛌🏻 Understanding Our Sleep Cycles
We are currently learning about sleep (so we can do more of it) and in my previous post I told you what happens when we sleep: we clean up our mental clutter, consolidate memories, restore immunity, repair tissues, regulate hormones, and process emotions. It’s like housekeeping, therapy, and internal systems maintenance all rolled into one.
💤6 Ways to Improve Your Sleep
Get more sleep, they say. As if it’s just that easy, right? As if we wouldn’t if we could?! Stress, kids, obligatory work schedules, capitalism, snoring partners, AND THE HORRORS OF THE YEAR 2025 tend to get in the way of that “recommended” 7-10 hours of shut-eye.
📚 READ: The title of this recent New York Times article sorta says it all, “Europe Built Trains. American Built Highways and Regret”. I thought it was interesting that they connect the US’s reliance on cars to the American obsession with individualism and freedom. Thinking about needing to own a car again has become one of my biggest deterrents for moving back to the US — I just love life without one. Read it here.
📺 WATCH: Dove into The Four Seasons this week and couldn’t stop! It’s based on a 1981 movie by Alan Alda and follows a group of friends in mid-life as they gather throughout the year and are tested when one of the three married couples decides to divorce. The episodes are divided by the seasons — Spring, Summer, Winter, and Fall — with two episodes assigned to each season. I recommend watching them two at a time and when you finish the series try watching the original movie, which you can also find on Netflix.
🎧 LISTEN: We were at a dinner party last weekend and I summarized the story of Adriana Smith — an American mother and nurse who was pronounced brain dead three months ago but has been kept on life support because she was 9 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. I wish I had a video of the horrified looks and comments I received — people just cannot believe a government has the power to do this to someone. NPR did an interview with Adriana’s family. You can listen here or read a transcript.
🧡 ENJOY: The past two weeks with our new sidekick, Murphy June, have been going well! Puppyhood is intense — but she’s adapting well, learning quickly, and growing faster than I’d like! Here are few resources I’ve been finding really helpful:
Empowered Puppy Program on Instagram - short, concise, informative posts that give me ideas of things I can do each day for training and enrichment.
Shaped by Dog Podcast - You can find this on Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts. I love that the episodes are short (5-20 minutes) and super actionable.
Puppy Brain - I’ve mentioned this book many times over the past month, but mentioning it again because I have referenced it SO many times since bringing Murphy home and following the author on Instagram has also been a great way to reinforce what is taught in the book.
