Resources for habit building + what to read, watch, listen to and enjoy...
And so we find ourselves in February! Basically the exact moment when all the over-achievers start posting about their successful new diet or how their endless morning routine finally helped them land that book deal.
It can leave us feeling a little…defeated…just as the year is getting underway.
So just in case you need it, here’s your reminder: there is nothing special about January 1st that makes it any better than today or tomorrow or next week to start doing the things you wanna be doing. If January got away from you simply flip it the bird and move on.
Whether you crushed January, are making slow progress, or are still gearing up — here are a couple of my favorite resources that can help:
🧠 Four Methods for Habit Formation - You’ve probably heard of “habit stacking” but say hello to my other 3 favorite methods.
✅ My Habit Tracking Spreadsheet for Google Sheets - Start using it at any time — I adjust the dates each month!
✨ How to Cycle Sync for Productivity + Focus - Can be a game-changer if you have an estrogen-based cycle.
Also just a quick reminder that on Monday I’ll host my Monthly Review Day for February. These are a casual online gathering for planning, goal check-ins, and habit formation. ALL are welcome and I’d love to see you there. Details are right here.
🧡 Help a Family Evacuate from Gaza
In issue #199 I shared a fundraising effort to safely evacuate a family of 19 people out of Gaza. That effort for Ahmed’s family has now raised just over $23,000. On average, at least 12,000 people open this newsletter every week — if each of us were able to donate $4 Ahmed would raise the remaining amount needed to help his family. If you are able to donate or share this information with people in your network you can do so here. Read more about Ahmed’s story in issue #199. Thank you to all who have donated!
📚 READ: Spotify recently rolled out an expansive collection of 200,000 audiobooks on it’s platform, available within the Premium Plan. I had sorta overlooked this, because previously their audiobook library consisted mostly of titles from the creative commons (aka a lot of Moby Dick and Little Women). Listeners now have access to a robust collection of audiobooks, including many popular best-sellers. I dove into Feel Good Productivity by Ali Abdall and have been loving it. You can learn more about the launch here, and although there isn’t an obvious spot in the app for accessing eBooks (yet?) I’ve found it easiest to search “audiobooks” and then select the audiobook genre from the results. (note: you’re currently limited to 15 hours of audiobooks per month, which seems ample to me. Most books are 8-10 hrs).
📺 WATCH: I do sorta love that Netflix can’t resist the urge to release a few cheesy, feel-good dramedies around Valentine’s Day. One they’ll be releasing this year is called Players (starring Gina Rodriguez and Damon Wayans Jr.). The film flips the script on the “player” narrative and gives us a female lead trying to win the boy. Watch the trailer here.
🎧 LISTEN: Emily in Your Phone (
) is one of my favorite Instagram follows (find her here) and I loved this interview with on her podcast, Under the Influence. They discuss the inherently political nature of social media, and how conservative forces are currently using it in their favor. An important listen as election season heats up. Tune in on Spotify.🧡 ENJOY: This is another recipe that instantly got added to our regular rotation. Moroccan Meatballs with Tzatziki by What’s Gaby Cooking are easy to make and great as leftovers. We serve them with this super simple naan recipe (another favorite!) and add some extra veggies like tomatoes and hot peppers. (pro tip: I add a dash of cinnamon to the meatball mixture and it adds such a nice touch. I’ve done the recipe with ground lamb, beef, and pork and all of them are good).
🎬 ACTION: As abortion access continues to decrease across the US, it’s important to know what resources are available to you and the people in your life who may need this form of healthcare. A resource I found recently is called Plan C, and it’s a website that helps navigate the complex web of laws and regulations that vary by state. Abortion pills are still available in all 50 states and can be used up to 13 weeks. Their website can help you navigate that process. They also have a great FAQ section about how abortion pills work. I know that if I were a woman (or a parent/grandparent to young adults) living in the US, I would want to know about this resource. FWIW these medications have a shelf life of 2+ years. Learn more here.
I got all excited about the Spotify audiobooks, but they are not available in DK…at least not on a premium plan subscribed to in DK. 😢 Also can’t get the “Daily List” here either.
According to Spotify Support, “Currently, Audiobooks on Spotify are only available in US, UK, CA, IE, AU, NZ.”
I currently listen to most of my audiobooks through Mofibo/Storytel or through Libby with my library accounts.
On the topic of January and starting fresh... In December everyone is talking about the new year and goals and business plans and I'm all "but I don't wanna!" It's just too much with the holidays and all. So I decided I'm taking a que from nature, it's dormant and resting outside, I'm going to do the same. I'm just steady as she goes in my business and come spring I'll amp up and find goals and plans. My year is not January-December, it's April-March. Best decision I've made for myself in a long time.
