How to reduce your BIGGEST stressor + this week's picks for work, wellness, and wonder!
Got a busy week coming up? Feeling a bit stressed about a specific project, deadline, or event as you move into the weekend?
Let’s take a deep breath. I have a quick exercise that can help.
Think about what the “Big Thing” is (the project, deadline, event, etc). Shut your eyes and spend 30 seconds thinking about what is required of you. What you’ve done so far. What still needs to be completed.
Now, without thinking too much about it, try this:
Pretend I’m a doctor, and I’ve just told you that due to a rare condition, you can only work 2 hours next week (gulp!).
Now think about the “Big Thing” again. If you only had two hours to put toward it, what are the things you’d do to have the biggest impact?
This should help your brain sort out what the actual needle-movers are related to the “Big Thing” and might help you cut irrelevant tasks, reduce the workload, and figure out which tasks to start with.
Write those things down and revisit them after the weekend. Relax and enjoy it!
🍲 EAT: A friend shared this recipe recently, and just seeing it transported me to my Dad's dining room table! His White Chicken Chili is one of my favorite dishes and this recipe is pretty much identical. I know it's not exactly soup season — but I promise this is a delight on a summer evening. Pair it with a tortilla chips, guac, and a margarita and call it a day! Grab the recipe.
🧘🏻♀️MOVE: Got a Netflix subscription? Want some short, simple workouts you can do at home? Be sure to check out this series of 10-minute workout videos created by Nike that is available for streaming. They also have 20 and 30-minute versions, so you can easily increase when you're ready. Check it out here.
📚 READ: This is NOT an endorsement for this movie, but we 100% need to talk about it. “Sound of Freedom” hit box offices in the US on July 4th weekend and is raking in the cash. First, we have the whole thing with the lead actor being a QAnon supporter (among other things), but since the show's release, child trafficking advocates and survivors have spoken out against it — stating that it tells a misleading and harmful story about child sex trafficking. Important things to know: despite what the film shows, most children are trafficked by someone they know and trust (not strangers who kidnap them). Most trafficked kids are teenagers. And most identify as LGBTQ+ or nonbinary, and end up trafficked when their family disowns them. If you see the movie shared, please push back on the narrative it presents! Rolling Stone did a great article about it here.
📺 WATCH: I was hesitant to watch this show. A bunch of people living in an underground silo? I dunno…sounded sorta dull. But after seeing this review from The Verge call it “a small town mystery set at the end of the world” that said that it “looks like The Hunger Games but turns into something closer to Fargo", how could I not watch it?! We flew through the first four episodes this week and I give it an enthusiastic two thumbs up. You can watch the trailer here.
👏🏻WORDS: I love this reminder that big changes come from small, tiny shifts. The little things we do each day are what make up our life, health, hobbies, purpose, and so much more. What habits do you want to stop doing each day? Which habits do you want to do more of? What are some new habits you’re hoping to develop?
